Los Angeles' 'Good Luck Bar' Celebrates 15 Years of Good Fortune
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 9, 2009 -- Los Angeles' neighborhood gem, Good Luck Bar, is celebrating its 15th year with a Thursday, November 19 anniversary event, from 7:00 PM to closing. The November 19 event, which serves as a "thank you" to its loyal clientele, as well as a beacon to those who have yet to discover this jewel-box in time, will feature $5.00 Stolichnaya, Sailor Jerry, Cazadores, or Jack Daniel's cocktails; selected beers for $2.00; and a special visit from the elusive and infamous Kogi truck (www.kogibbq.com). The evening's entertainment will include tunes from DJ Travis Keller, of Buddyhead fame, as well as three Chinese burlesque performances by "twin" dancers, at 10:00 PM, 11:00 PM and midnight.
Good Luck Bar's owner and Los Angeles native, Sean MacPherson, used to frequent a dodgy, 1940s Chinatown joint named Yee Mee Loo. The classic Los Angeles watering hole was a favorite escape for MacPherson, so when Yee Mee Loo's closed its doors after a 40-year run, MacPherson felt compelled to keep its memory alive.
To that end, MacPherson drew back the velvet curtain on his new venture in 1994, with Good Luck Bar, which tastefully recreated the transporting magic that was Yee Mee Loo. Adding to that magic, Sean "imported" Yee Mee Loo's bartender, a mysterious Chinese fellow who preferred to be called "Richard".
MacPherson blanketed his new establishment in rich, ruby hues, playing off of the Chinese belief that the color red brings good luck. The color gold - which in Chinese culture has been known to symbolize wealth and happiness - was also placed masterfully throughout the venue in a highly-ornamented, dragon-festooned ceiling above the oval bar.
In a small space that formerly housed a Mexican transvestite bar in the Davidian Building (what to some, is one of the homeliest structures in Los Feliz), Good Luck Bar prospered (wealth and happiness, indeed!). The venue, marked only by a small neon sign and red vinyl door, sits right around the corner from the historic Vista Theatre, attracting a completely varied clientele: From punk-ish hipsters to yuppies to aging artists.
Entering Good Luck Bar is like strolling onto a 1940s Chinatown movie set. The dim lighting only deepens the venue's red overtones and furthers the sense of decadent looseness that one would imagine might prevail in a setting resembling a classy version of an opium den. Beyond the 360 degree bar, Good Luck Bar houses a collection of Chinese day beds and ottomans with plush cushions, in what was reputed to be the performance space of its previous transvestite incarnation. This lounge-like atmosphere would become a frontrunner to the bar-as-lounge explosion that would follow suit after Good Luck Bar's 1994 opening.
In keeping with the Chinese speakeasy setting, Good Luck Bar features an eclectic menu of specialty cocktails with an exotic bent. While many of the featured cocktails were Richard's creations, the menu recently underwent some fine-tuning by rising Los Angeles mixology star, Eric ("ET") Tecosky. Tecosky holds court as bar manager at Good Luck Bar's sister property, Jones Hollywood, which also celebrated its 15th birthday this year.
"Sean created Good Luck Bar as a venue for what would become its devoted clientele, to forget about life for a bit - a spot to escape to another time and place," says David Granger, Good Luck Bar's general manager. "The November 19th event is our way of saying thanks to all of the people who have fallen under Good Luck Bar's mischievous spell, for the past 15 years…without them, we'd have had no luck at all."
