What is cross dressing

Cross dressing is when a man or woman chooses to wear clothes of the opposite sex. To most of us this may seem strange, almost perverse. Yet there are those of us who feel driven by a deep desire to cross dress. When we wear clothes of the opposite sex, we feel at ease, comfortable, and at one with who we are.

Before I go further, I would like to dispel a few myths about cross dressers. The first myth is that cross dressers are gay. That couldn't be further from the truth. Most cross dressers are straight men. Yes, you read correctly, men. With society these days it is easy for a woman to wear clothes of the opposite sex without attracting much attention - it is much hard for a man to wear high heels and skirt without at least being the victim of a few raised eye brows.

The second myth is that all transgendered people are the same. In reality transgendered people are diverse, firstly as human beings, but also in their transgendered experience. Some transgendered people are happy wearing clothes of the opposite sex, these people are typically referred to as cross dressers or transvestites.

Other transgendered people feel as if they are a woman in a man's body (or vice versa) and spend a considerable amount of time and money trying to look, act and eventually become someone of the opposite sex. These people are referred to as transsexuals. Either 'pre-op' - before sexual reassignment surgery, or 'post-op' after sexual reassignment surgery.

While it may be easy to categorize people, the truth is far more nuanced, and each person's experience is unique. I encourage you to get to know someone who is transgendered to understand more about who they are. You'll get a new perspective, and make a sensitive and caring friend.
